Toronto, ON - Wishing you all a very Happy Thai Pongal! On this auspicious time, we bring you great news about the birth of Eekai Foundation, which is being formed from the financial commitment from former TVI.
As a follow up to our December 30th 2016 Press Release, we are proud to announce that we have now satisfied the payment of the majority of the outstanding liabilities and are now ready to form a non-profitable foundation.
The Eekai Foundation will operate as a non-political, non-religious humanitarian organization and grow as one of the most credible, transparent organizations for us to unite, help and serve our people in Canada and in Sri Lanka.
As per the December 30th 2016 Press Release, we are forming the Eekai Foundation with just over a $1 Million Funding commitment over 5 years from 2019. The funds for the Eekai Foundation will be paid out over 5 years as we receive the funds on a monthly basis from the purchaser of the TVI assets.
The Eekai Foundation will operate as a non-political, non-religious humanitarian organization and grow as one of the most credible, transparent organizations for us to unite, help and serve our people in Canada and in Sri Lanka. Not only that, our hope and desire is that the Eekai Foundation will be a role model for the Tamil Expatriate Community around the globe to unite in their home country to carry out similar humanitarian work for our people.
We, the former TVI shareholders, board and the tireless, dedicated staff and many many volunteers are happy and proud that we are forming a community foundation with significant financial commitment to do much needed charitable work for our people.
Dr. V. Santhakumar, the Chair of the Board says, “ We would like to thank all of the people who were involved and contributed to the success for former TVI”. Today is a great day for Tamil Canadian Community as we give birth to the ‘Eekai Foundation’ as we promised to you all. The amount former TVI committing to Eekai foundation is the seed funding for the amount of humanitarian work in front of us. We strongly believe that the entire community will come together and make Eekai foundation success to help the vulnerable youth, women and children in Sri Lanka, Canada and elsewhere ”.
Eekai Foundation’s mission, vision, governing mechanism and its intended operating mechanism for humanitarian work is published in our web site www.eekai.org and will be updated regularly as we move along.
The Eekai Foundation has retained the services of Mr. Taras Kulish, senior counsel with the law firm Steinberg Title Hope & Israel LLP in Toronto, to represent it in the legal process to incorporate a not-for-profit organization and to guide the Eekai Foundation with good governance principals in a transparent manner. “We are very confident that the Eekai Foundation will provide much needed psycho-social and humanitarian services to the Sri Lankan community in Canada and Sri Lanka affected by previous armed conflicts,” says Taras Kulish. “The Eekai Foundation will be organized to pursue humanitarian purposes in both Canada and Sri Lanka and will be an example to the Sri Lankan Tamil diaspora worldwide.”
We want every Tamil Canadian to be part of the Eekai Foundation in some form or shape. It’s your foundation to make a difference in the life of our people.
